The Speed Awareness Monitor, is not a camera and doesn’t take images of the vehicles!
It records the time and speed of every vehicle that passes that position.
If it doesn’t light up, you are under 27mph, and it doesn’t indicate the speed if above 45mph, but still records them!
We can use this data to assist us when we need to comment on a planning application or to show the Highway’s department the traffic data if requested.
It is not sent to the Police as it is separate to the Community Speed Watch, which is a Police run scheme.
We have 9 poles, some of which we are allowed to have the monitor recording in either direction, as at Lynn Road, Nourse Drive, Lamsey Lane and Station Road near Gidney Drive.
The monitor is only allowed to be in place for up to 4 weeks then cannot be returned to that monitoring direction for 8 weeks.
One line on the data is 85% percentile, the clever programme we use to download and analyse the data reports the average speed that 85% of the vehicles have done over the period.
